Roller bearings consist of three main elements: inner and outer rings and between them, the rolling elements that reduce friction. Roller bearings can mount or stabilize rotating shafts with varying amounts of radial or axial forces. The rolling elements produce some friction; ceramic produces less than steel and with appropriate lubrication, even less.

The ambient conditions and the task that the bearing is to be put to define the material selection and specification. These factors determine not only the relation of the inner ring to the outer ring and the rolling components, but also the rolling body cage design, as well as other factors like bearing clearance and amount of lubrication.
